[Challenges] - Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is one of the defining challenges of our time, requiring a radical transformation of production and consumption systems to meet ambitious environmental and climate goals. Responding to this urgency, the Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology is committed to advancing research and projects that support sustainable practices. At the core of its work lies the development of innovative eco-compatible nanomaterials, designed to reduce environmental footprints while fostering economic stability and social well-being. Through cutting-edge methodologies, CCHT not only drives technological innovation but also aims to promote shifts in consumption patterns and collective behaviours.

[Challenges] - Climate Change

CLIMATE CHANGE

The accelerating climate crisis is reshaping environments and putting cultural and landscape heritage at risk. The Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology develops innovative tools, such as digital twins of coastal systems, to study degradation processes in coastal and lagoon areas. These technologies support the protection of fragile ecosystems and monuments while fostering sustainability, cultural participation, and resilience for future generations.

[Challenges] - Art Crime

ART CRIME

Art crime encompasses a wide range of criminal activities that often converge in the illicit trade of cultural goods stripping communities of their heritage and, in some cases, even contributing to financing organised crime. To counter these risks, the Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology is developing innovative tools to detect, prevent, and disrupt cultural heritage crimes. Advanced monitoring systems help identify clandestine excavations and protect archaeological sites, while digital platforms powered by data analysis and machine learning support law enforcement in tracing illicit art market networks. At the same time, cutting-edge methods such as spectroscopy, 3D imaging, and blockchain reinforce the authentication of artworks and artefacts, safeguarding cultural heritage from forgery and unlawful trade.
